well you have a few ways you can go

    spend a few benjamins
    or
    spend some pocket change

well you can go and buy this Aerocool GT-1000 Heatpipe Cooler, goes for about $50-$60

or what would best suit your needs,, cause its getting to that age
any old socket 478 cooler you can find at any Little computer shop in town,

and you can buy another case fan that will go right in the same spot as the old one, if you want to keep the old heat sink? but it still does its job.

replacing the case fan might be what you want to do, seeing as there might be a chance you could hurt the motherboard changing the heat sink,

most case fans are real cheap. and sometimes FREE. but if you really want a nice one, Ultra 80mm Silent Case Fan would be the way to go as far as NICE case fans. those are about $15-$20 and that will do the trick.

hope that helps you out, there’s lots of manuals on dells site for taking everything off and putting it back on, just follow the directions.

    happy hunting

your notebook is way too old to do some tweaking. Any new cooling fan is quieter, but I would not recommend you to invest money on this laptop, rather than to get it replaced.
